Birch is the even white-trunked light tree giving the transparent shade, decorating at any season any rural view, enjoys special love in Russia. Since old years the birch was the image of Russia. The simple and touching beauty of the birch imparts it the high esthetic value.

Goods made of birch bark as national crafts include caskets, birch bark containers, bast baskets, boxes, souvenir toys, ornaments, beads, hairbrushes, trays, pictures, panels – the magnificent works of art from Velikiy Ustyug, executed in the style and traditions of the folk art craft.

History of the art craft painting on birch bark

The history of the art craft from Velikiy Ustyug painting and carving on birch bark begins from the XVIII-th century in Shemogodsky volost of Velikoustyuzhsky district. The basis of the art named as «shemogodsky birch bark» includes the motive of curling sprout with the spiral curls and round rosettes with the small cuts. Such patterns decorate the surface of the birch bark containers, boxes, caskets, decorative plates and the other items. They put the foil, colored paper, fabric under the openwork cut, or the background is painted to the contrast color. Using the natural beauty of the material, Ustyug carvers create the real works of art.

Birch bark braiding

Birch bark braiding is the most ancient way to process birch bark. Before to start braiding, a band of birch bark is cleared of thin whitish "fringe", divide layer by layer till the necessary thickness, and then cut the strips of the required width. For the birch bark to be more flexible, especially for braiding of any small products, it shall be steamed out in hot water and taken in work at once. Steamed out, hot birch bark does not crack and takes any form. If braiding is made with the unsteamed out strips, they should be oiled before work with sunflower-seed oil. Bast shoes

Bast shoes are the low footwear widespread in Russia in olden time, but, nevertheless, of the wide use in countryside of Russia up to 1930s, braided of the wood bast (lime, elm and the others) or birch bark. The bast shoe was tied to the foot with the laces braided from the same bast as the bast shoes were made of. In Russian folklore and culture numerous stories, songs and sayings were dedicated to the bast shoes.
